New Year, New Closet: The DIY Reset You Need to Start off 2026

A new year has a way of making us crave a fresh start in our space, and one of the most impactful places to begin is your closet. January is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and intentionally reset your wardrobe so that everything you own supports how you want to feel and live in 2026. At Nice & Neat Homes, we always say that a well-organized closet isn’t about perfection—it’s about function. We want you to love what you wear every single day.

Recently, our team completed a full closet organization project that perfectly captured what organization can look like when guided by professional insight. This project focused on decluttering, creating cohesion, and maximizing every inch of space using affordable, intentional products. Below, we’re sharing our favorite tried-and-true recommendations along with our step-by-step approach—straight from a Utah professional organizer. Consider this your guide to tackle your own closet!

Why the New Year is the Best Time to Organize Your Closet

The start of the year naturally invites reflection. Your closet should reflect your current lifestyle, body, and preferences—not who you were five years ago or what you *might* wear someday. Winter is also an ideal season for closet organization because you’re already wearing your heavier layers, making it easier to assess what truly works for you.

When you declutter with intention, you create space physically and mentally. A streamlined closet saves time in the morning, reduces decision fatigue, and helps you feel confident getting dressed. While there’s never a bad time to tackle an organizing project, that is why  closet organization is one of the most transformative projects we recommend completing early in the year. Have we convinced you yet?

Our Professional Organized-Approved Product Recommendations

These are the five products we used for this project and highly recommend for any closet organization project:

1. Wood Hangers: for cohesion, durability, and a polished look

2. Fabric Bins: ideal for high shelves and seasonal storage

3. Bin Clips: simplifies labeling fabric bins

4. Drawer Dividers: adjustable, and essential for keeping drawers tidy long-term

5. Hat Organizer: a game changer for any baseball cap collection

Each of these products is affordable, accessible, and proven to work. We’ve used them in client homes all across Utah. Take what you need and leave the rest. Included below are some photos of how they look in a space. Now, let’s chat about how to implement these products once you have them!

The Closet Organization Process

For this project (or any closet truly), our goal is simple: create a space that feels calm, cohesive, and easy to maintain. Here’s how we approached it:

1. Declutter First (Always)

Before introducing any organizing products, we edited the wardrobe. We encouraged the client to ask simple but powerful questions:

  • Do I love this?
  • Does it fit my life right now?
  • Would I buy this again today?

Anything that didn’t earn a confident “yes” was donated.

2. Switch to Matching Hangers

Our BIGGEST tip for closets—and one of the most affordable visual upgrades—is switching to matching hangers. This instantly creates cohesion and elevates the look of any closet. For this closet, we used wood hangers. Velvet is another option we use often. It all depends on your preferences and the space you are working with. Wood hangers are sturdier than velvet, but bulkier as well.

3. Utilize Upper Shelves with Fabric Bins

Most closets have unused space up high, and this project was no exception. We added fabric bins on the top shelf to store off-season items, accessories, and sentimental pieces. Fabric bins are lightweight, flexible, and budget-friendly, making them a staple in DIY organization projects. This option comes in multiple sizes and colors, so be sure to measure first!

To keep everything easy to find, we used bin clips to label—a small detail that makes a big difference. Clear labeling ensures the system stays intuitive for everyone using the space. Bin clips are essential because they make it possible to label fabric or textured bins.

4. Organize Drawers with Dividers

Drawers can quickly become chaotic without structure. We installed drawer dividers to separate items like workout wear, pajamas, and undergarments. This not only maximizes drawer space, but also prevents items from becoming jumbled over time.

5. Add a Dedicated Hat Organizer

Hats are often overlooked in closet design, yet they can get messy and hard to sort through when not stored properly. We added a hat organizer to keep hats visible, accessible, and in great condition—no more crushed brims or jumbled piles.

6. Color-Code for the Win

Finally, we color-coded the entire closet. This is one of our favorite finishing touches because it’s both beautiful and functional. Grouping clothing by color makes it easier to find what you need and gives the closet a boutique-like feel. Here is the link to our full color-coding guide so you can recreate this step with confidence.
